My Diva’s Birthday party (pt2)

Finally after weeks of planning the day had finally arrived. It was a stressful yet exciting all wrapped into one. As i have no family around in helping me pull it off. Though i was so lucky to have found C’est La Vie that did all the decoration and the food so i did not have to stress about setting up and the party snacks. Just the special treats i made additionally for the arts and craft theme. I had nightmares about the arts and craft bag not being complete by the time the party started so that gift bag for the kiddies was packed almost a week before the party.

Disclaimer: I seem to keeping bumping my head with this. I’m a perfectionist and want things done a certain way and tend to want to be superwoman. And it seems that I really cant be planner, Hostess and photographer. One always lack and in this case it was my photography. I was so busy playing host that i didnt photographically do such a good job..LOL. I didnt photographed all the kiddies and even the ideas i had about what i wanted to photographed i didnt get too. So sad about this šŸ˜¦

Edited: I realised that i actually didnt say what exactly the theme was. My diva loves Mickey and we also love to do arts and craft. And I know so many people say Mickey parties are done to death. So i thought we should do Mickey with a twist. Combine the Mickey and Arts and craft. Mbali has a Mickey Colour Adventure DVD with the episode Mickeys Artsy Arts and craft show. So I decided to take this episode as the theme of the party. And i just ran with it. And that is how the theme came about.

When i got to the venue they were already busy setting up. and the waitress that was alocated to our party was so helpful in setting up the arts things in the way that i have envisioned the partyAs centerpieces i found these cute easles that is about 10cm high. and was perfect for the A4 paintings that we have done over the course of the year to standĀ  on. and then balloons were placed in the middle and it just looked amazing. I bought these small tin containers to put in crayons, glitter, glitterglue and all other crafty decor things. they were so nice and colourful and definately tied the table together. I also had all the craft glue on the table so kiddies could easily get hold of them. This really brought together the craft theme. For table cards I took pages that i had at home which Mbali painted and cut it into tents and printed on paperstock “Mickey’s Art Supplies”Ā  and randomly put it between the arts supplies on the table.Actually all the labels on the tables i did this way.

Here are the treats I made by myself…Lets start with the Rice Krispie paintbrushes.

I dont have step by step instructions of how i made it so i will just give the links as to where i got the recipe from.

Next up we have the Smarshmellows. Tought this was such a fun way to bring colours into the party. It is marshmellows dippied in melted chocolate topped with a smartie. Was so easy and quick to do. A side note: before buying the marshmellows make sure the mellows are not slanted. this works best with masrmellows that is neatly cut. else the plate looks abit untidy.

These cute lollies i did exactly the same as the Smarshmellows, but instead of using dark chocolate melts i used white chocolate melts and added pink coloured chocolate powder to the melted chocolate to turn it the cutsey pink colour with Pink smartie on top. and put it on a skewer to make it into a lollie.

The Birthday Cake..I am really loving how this idea fitted into the arts and craft theme. Cupcakes on a artist palette. And also a very cheap idea for a birthday cake.Ā  Then after the candles are blown each kiddie gets a cupcake.

All the kiddies got a art supply bag for the party.

This bag contained:

  • letter from Mickey saying:

“There is no right or wrong when it comes to making art. Just make sure that you have fun, is the most important part. Splash a little paint, draw a little line.Just make sure that you have fun each and every time.

Lets make art….Mickey

  • Mickey Arts colouring book
  • Artist Paint Palette
  • Paint brush
  • Photoframe

All the kiddies got Mickey ears when they arrived. It was in a little picnic basket with the note “We got ears say cheers”Ā  i bought a special Pink Minnie ears for my diva but she was not to impressed having one that looks different from all the other kiddies.

I wanted all the kiddies that came to take self portaits with a photoframe. But like i said once the party got started everthing was so hectic and the play area was more enticing for the kids than posing for a photo. Here are are a few I managed to capture.

See such cute pink Minnie ears but my diva was really not impressed with them. she wanted the black ears. The party started with the kids decorating the fridge magnet photoframe and they could decorate their party packs too, everything was up for decorating at this party. Though the photoframe i wont lie was most enjoyed by the mommies. Wish i could have captured more of the mommies in action. But my hostess duties out ranked my photography duty. After the successfulness of the photoframes we moved on to the painting of canvases. I think the photoframe activity really got these little ones creative juices flowing as they made the most spectacular paintings.

And after all the activity it was time to sing Happy Birthday to the Birthday girl. Thanks to My dear freind and fellow photographer Karin. She took my camera and manage to sneak me into some of the photos.. Thanks Karin.

My diva was in such a hurry to blow the candles while everyone was singing for her that i swear i probably lit the candles 7-10times before it got to theĀ  blowing of the candles part. And then each kiddie got one of these huge cupcakes.. Sugar high i tell you. But luckily there was a huge playground where they could run that sugar high off.

Then after the sugar high my diva got to play it all off. Just love venues with beeeeg playgrounds.

Mother’s day

With all the party planning i have been doing for the last few weeks i never got to post about my very special mothers day that my hubby and sweet daughter did for me.My little Diva brought me a hand made card they made at creche. though i’m sure the teacher did all the colouring in as this is way too neat. but its special none the less for me.

Sunday morning started off with my hubby fetching my dear daughter and i couldnt come out of the room. he had to put the finishing touches on the card with her. They suprised me with a pressie and 2 gorgeous cards. The pressie was these gorgeous plush slippers i so dearly needed. You wont believe but the last time i bought slippers was with the birth of Mbali so that is literally 2 years ago so I was in dire need of new ones. But you know us mommies, keep postponing to buy something new for yourself because the kiddie needs something.

The message:“Eventhough you dont always understand my language, my hair, my moods I know you always put me first”.

The dh made the flowers that was on the card into a “a” for her name just like in my signiture for my photography logo. So sweet. So this is the finishing touches they were making so early in the morning.

Dh made us a 5star breakfast. we spend a cosy day indoors and then later the evening we went out for supper. Perfect end to a perfect day..

Popsicle stick Photoframes

We are having an arts and craft Mickey and Minnie mouse party for my little diva this coming weekend. so watch this space for teh party pics. So in keeping with the arts and craft theme i was making a popsicle stick photoframe as a gift for the kiddies. where they can unleash their creativity by decorating the photoframe.

  • What you need:
  • 6 Popsicle sticks ( i was lucky to find coloured one’s at our local Plastic warehouse so didnt need to paint them. But i guess you can leave it plain as well
  • Fridge Magnets (optional)
  • Craft glue

How to:

Place sticks vertically paralel next to each other and put glue in the corners. But remember to have a little of the rounded stick edges sticking out.

Then place a pair of sticks horizontally over the glue. You can wait till its dry. or be like me that just continues regardless as i have 10 of these frames to do. Once the horizontal sticks are in place follow step 1 in putting glue on the edges of the horizontal sticks.

then place another pair of sticks vertically over the glue. these additional sticks will help keep the photo in place.

Then at each corner you can add a fridge magnet so it can be stuck to the fridge. ( I still have to do this.

While i was busy with the photoframes i gave my diva popsicle sticks of her own. i showed her what to do and she made it all from scratch. she put the frame together with my guidance.

Then after the frame was made. the fun began. I gave her lots of craft decor to choose from and a bottle of craft glue and she let her little imagination go wild with no interferance from momy.

and this was the end result of the first frame.

and second time round she truly let her imagination go wild as she knew what she was doing.

So this is what the kiddies at her party is in for. Lots of creative activities to do.

Rainbow Kit Kat cake

I am no baker by far but have you seen the costs of birthday cakes these days. I almost fell out of my chair when a baker quoted me R750 for a 3tierĀ  fairy cake and R450 for a Mickey 1tier cake. and then our local supermarket charges R250 for a plain cake with a Mickey ricepaper print out. Oh my word.. so i decided to take matters into my own hands and make a cake i know to be flop proof. My 8min microwave cake.

I searched pinterest for ideas and wanted to combine 2 ideas. the rainbow colour cake and then as my frosting never comes out the right consistancy I thought the Kit Kat idea would be the perfect solution to my problems.

2 eggs
1 tsp Vanilla Essence
60ml Oil
gel food colouring (its actually a chocolate cake but i substitute the 2.5tbsp cocoa with gel food colouring)
250ml Self raising flour
250ml Sugar
250ml Boiling water
Pinch of salt

250ml Icing sugar
1-2 tablespoons margerine
dash of milk as needed
Lemon juice (optional)

5 Kit Kat slabs
500g pack of Smarties ( though i cannot lie. i went to my closets sweet warehouse and they had smartie look alikes and these were cheaper than the actual smarties. I then bought 2 boxes of smarties to add to the fake smarties and no-one was the wiser.)

How to make:

1. Mix all ingredients together.
2. Place in a plastic ice-cream container
3. Microwave on high for 8 minutes

This recipe will make enough for one layer. So for each batch i used a different colour gel food colouring. Thansk to a suggestion of a follwer of my post, Nelia, about using gel food colouring i went to go get some at my closest baking store and the results were fantastic. the colours were so vibrant, would have never achieved it with normal store bought liquid food colouring.

I am useless whe it comes to frosting so just made my best butter icing. Cup of icing sugar with a table spoon of butter and creamed it with a bit of milk and a dash of lemon juice to make it not too sweet. Start on the sides. As i apply the frosting i cover the area with Kit Kat. as it sticks better when the frosting is wet. you can do single Kit kat next to each other but it goes faster when you break the Kit Kat into 2’s. Then repeat until all the sides are covered. to keep it in place, place a ribbon around the cake. it also makes the cake prettier.

Put frosting on the top of the cake and cover it with smarties. And you are done.

Happy Birthday my Diva pt1

On this day 2years agao at 14:10pm my life was changed in a blink. Nothing can ever prepare you for what a baby is all about. No amount of books or peoples advice compares to “on the job” training. You have made me learn so much about myself what i’m capable of and what i never thought i could manage to do. You help me push my boundaries and made me come out stronger on the other side.

I always thought when people say ” i cant imagine life without my child” to be so cliche. but now I’m the one using this cliche phrase. Truelly i cant remember how life was before you. It just feels like you have been here since forever and I cant imaging life without your little stubborn personality, your divaness, that sweet smile, Your hugs and kisses and love.

Everyday i look at you I’m reminded that you were made from the love me and yor daddy has for each other. & i Love you right to the moon and back.

She woke this morning with a cot filled with balloons. she was dumbstruck. Me and dh the night before blew up as many balloons as we could and filled the living room floor. together with her presents. when she saw the living room she let out a big “WOW”.

then she got to blow out the candles of her mini Kit Kat cake i made for her.

The it was off to creche where the festivities continued. She got to stand in front of the class with a fish hat as her class is called fishies. and the class sang for her Happy Birthday.

Then she got to blow out the candles of her second cake Kit Kat Rainbow smartie cake i made for her.

and what birthday would be complete with out photo’s of the birthday girl.

And here she is calling “oohh Toodles”

Mothers day flowers

as Mothersday is on Sunday i thought i’d share a little craft me and Mbali did and sent off to the grandparents. It is a little paper flower basket.

What you need

How to make

Print out the flower basket template on white paper stock. let your little one colour in the flowers on the paperstock. (my diva cant colour in the lines yet so she went wild painting the flowers). for extra prettiness through glitter on the wet paint and let it dry. Once dry cut out the the flower shapes.

stick the pipecleaner gently through the middle of the flower, bent the tip of the pipecleaner down. put some craft glue over the pipe cleaner and stick the pom pom down and let dry. Also stick the leaves to the pipecleaner and let dry.

forĀ  basket glue the cut out in a cone shape and glue the long stip as the handle and let dry before use.

Superbabes playdate

Recently my diva was invited to a superbabes playdate.Ā  Here are some photos of the fun she had. She loves jumping castle and there was a huge princess on so you can imagine how much fun she had.Image

Then after all the playing outside we did some artwork inside.Ā  She made a paperplate fishy all by herself. mommy just took the photos.

She absolutely loved the stickers that was available for decorations and it landed up all over her face.
